KATHMANDU, Aug 27: A new 0.11-square-kilometre lake has formed about 18 kilometres upstream of the Rasuwagadhi border point after the flow of the Lhende River was blocked again, satellite images have confirmed.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has issued a high-alert warning, saying the natural dam could burst any time and trigger another major flood downstream.

According to the authority, a preliminary analysis of satellite images from Planet Labs and Landsat received at 11:44 am Thursday confirmed that the river had been blocked by a landslide, creating the lake. The analysis was conducted using satellite imagery provided by the Stimson Center.
A natural dam is considered unstable, and its collapse could cause another devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.
The authority has urged all residents and travellers in downstream areas as well as rescue workers deployed in the field to exercise extreme caution and immediately move away from riverbanks to safer locations.
