KATHMANDU, Oct 12: A nine-storey building at Basantapur Durbar Square which was severely destroyed by the 2015 massive earthquake is now being reconstructed with the financial support of Rs 1 billion 3 million by the Chinese government. 

The reconstruction work was inaugurated by Wang Yang, the Vice Premier of China during his four-day official visit on August 15, 2017.

Similarly, Durbar High School, the first English school founded by Prime Minister Junga Bahadur Rana was also affected by the earthquake in 2015. This school which is located at the heart of the capital is also being renovated under Chinese assistance amounting up to Rs 800 million. 

The building of the school is one of the 25 quake-damaged projects that China agreed to help reconstruct. The school, established in 1853, was shifted to the current location in 1891.

The government had made an arrangement to teach the students at make-shift shelters within the school premises. The students have been taking their classes at a nearby public college over the past month after the school building was demolished for reconstruction. 

Before the devastating quake, the building was housing two schools -- Durbar High School and Sanskrit Secondary School with around 500 students, according to the school administrations.

Dashrath Stadium located at Tripureshwor is currently being constructed with the Chinese aid which was also devastated after the 2015 quake. 

Moreover, a Chinese company is working to expand the Kalanki-Maharajgunj road section of the Ring Road after completing the Koteshwor-Kalanki section. 

Experts opine that during the much-awaited two-day visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping on October 12 and 13, more other agreements will be signed between Nepal and China regarding physical infrastructures including cross-border rail and road connectivity.
