Not laughing at him, definitely not!
KATHMANDU, Nov 6: On November 4, in one of the Bundesliga (German top-tier football league) games, a rather unusual moment took place. With his side 1-0 up away to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Mainz’s keeper Robin Zentner produced one of the most hilarious instances in football when he mistook the penalty spot for the ball.
Zentner is the fourth goalkeeper to guard the Mainz goal since Loris Karius left for Liverpool in 2016. His impressive game against Eintracht Frankfurt got him selected for the game against Mönchengladbach on Match day 11. Luck got the better of him during Saturday’s game though, when he actually thought the penalty spot was the ball and tried to kick the air, quite funnily so.
The commentators made the instant even more comical when they tried to restrain their laughter but failed adversely. “I’ve never seen anything quite like it! Oh, dear me!”
"It's incredible," Zentner told Sky afterwards. "I received the ball and then I look to see who I can pass to. I saw Jean (Gbamin) and maybe I saw something white (of course, the penalty spot) out of the corner of my eye and I thought that was the ball, but then I didn't feel anything when I tried to kick it."
Well, as the error didn’t lead to a goal, Zentner can definitely sit back and laugh about it now.
