Gyanmey Dorje, the Sculptor from Dolpa

He has been visiting Kathmandu in every six month for the past five years. "We have harvesting season only for six months. Then we come down to lower Dolpo and to other places once winter starts," said Gyanmey Dorje Lama Gurung. Gyanmey was born in Tinche, Dolpa. He learned sculpting mantras in stone when he was fifteen years old. He is also a Lama. He also worked in China. He earned horse and yaks for his sculpting works in China. He received the animals in place for money since they were considered as assets. He spent a couple of years farming in his village. During off-seasons, he went in searched for ‘yarshagumba’ and then set off to China for sculpting. He still does the same when he is in his village. After arriving in Kathmandu, Gurung was surprised to see people paying money for water. On the other hand, he was equally elated to find good education facility here. He has three sons and a daughter. Two of his sons are studying in Kathmandu. The third one is studying in India. His daughter is also a student in Pokhara. He is a proud father who has educated all his children. "In Dolpo, people offer you tea. You can drink as much as you want. Living a life is not expensive," said Gyanmey Dorje.  He left his horses at the jingle in Sar Tara and came to Kathmandu for six months. On his return to the village, he will look for the horses. Only if they are alive will he find them.
