Boyd meets Girl performs at Le Sherpa
KATHMANDU, Oct 30: With Rupert Boyd in guitar and Laura Metcalf in cello, the Boyd meets Girl gave their third and last performance for Third Gharana Music Festival 2017 on Saturday at the Le Sherpa in Maharajgunj.
In a stage set at the restaurant’s garden, people thoroughly enjoyed the hour-long classical music played by the husband-wife duo. This was Boyd Meets Girl’s third year of collaboration with Gharana Music Foundation.
Rupert and Laura with their acoustic performance took the audience to a journey as they told different stories via their music. The musical pieces were a reflection of dance, lifestyle, human feelings, as well as of non-living things such as a coin, a cloth and a willow tree.
Many of the sets played were originally composed for other instruments like flute and piano, and were played after being rearranged for guitar and cello. The duo is influenced by maestros like Johann Sebastian Bach and the influence was visible in their performance as they played four short pieces by Bach, again rearranged to be played in guitar and cello.
The musical duo ended their performance with a 10 minutes set comprising three pieces composed by Jaime Zenamon. Though a Nepali group of musicians who go by the name ‘Ma’ were scheduled to give an opening performance for the evening, the band had to cancel their performance as the vocalist fell sick.
In a quick chat with the duo, they said they were looking forward to do different collaborations with Nepali as well as international artists.
"Our collaboration with Kutumba and (Mithila Natyakala Parishad) MINAP Ensemble at Janakpur was inspiring. We had to learn the songs in a few hours and perform. The audience was amazing and the concert was a success. We can definitely explore the possibilities of collaborating with Nepali artist and perform independently," Rupert and Laura said.
This was their last performance in Nepal as a duo, while Rupert is scheduled to perform with another artist, Paul Cesarczyk on November 2. Gharana Music Festival also has another week of concerts and workshops lined up where other national and international artists will be performing in different venues of Kathmandu.
