Falling down, a learning process

 

You can be addictive in a good way when you participate in an extreme sport. And it is not uncommon for youngsters involving in such sports. One such extreme sport is Skateboarding and the adrenaline rush is not only meant for the players but the audiences too.

One such platform for skateboarding is KTM Skate park in Naya Bazar and Skatemandu where youngsters like Dhiraj Pariyar (12), Rohan Deula (20) and Rejina Maharjan (21) are some examples who are passionate about skateboarding and are doing it passionately having their own skate stories.

 “I used to see children skating from outside the park, one day I came inside as I was in my slipper. They told me to wear shoes, next day I came wearing boots and it has been more than a year since I have been skating,” said Dhiraj Pariyar, 12 year old, skater. Nevertheless, Dhiraj has won the 1st prize at 2nd National Nepal Skate Championship.

You fall down numerous times, getting bruises are a routine, your shoes get badly torn even your skateboard becomes weak. So, this extreme sport is obviously not cheap. Another skater Rohan has been skating since past 5 and half years. Every day he spends most of the time skating in the park after college.

“Looking at the photos before I skate, I saw myself not caring about how I wear my clothes and they used to be dirty and I was not confident enough. But somehow skate changed my lifestyle. You develop a change in you where you become confident and stylish as well. And I want to continue skateboarding and make it my career,” said Rohan.

Skateboarding is not just meant for boys, it is for girls too. And Rejina is one such professional skater who used to be a tomboy and shared, “I was 19 years old when skateboarding caught my attention. My friends influenced me where they helped me with more knowledge about skateboarding then I bought my skateboard.I do skating which made people question me about being a girl. People blame me for roaming around skateboarding that could break my bones instead of focusing in household works, but I continued.”

Now, she is a sports teacher in DAV school who dreams of taking skateboarding in school sports too. She added, “Falling down while skateboarding is a part of learning and I learned this sport despite the obstacles and it’s fun doing it and I like it as well,” added Rejina.
