Couple donates $10,000 for child education
Bibhusan Shakya and Shilva Shrestha, who are currently pursuing their education in the United States, have donated US$10,000 to Teach for Nepal, an organization working in the field of child education in Nepal. The couple got married on May 15, and instead of spending money on lavish wedding party, they donated it for the cause of providing quality education to the children.
According to a press release issued by Teach for Nepal, Shakya is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan, while Shrestha is currently doing her PhD in Biology in the University of Michigan. The press statement quoted Shrestha saying: “We both are still studying and we believe that our action will influence others to give toward the betterment of our country. Although dowry system has been reduced in Nepal, a lot of money is spent on gold during weddings to show off, which I think is unnecessary and this action is a step to end that age-old tradition.”
Likewise, Shakya said: “When we help others, we get a feeling of satisfaction and happiness and we experience a surge of energy and purposefulness. We feel transformed.”
