Coronavirus: Study finds this lingering symptom in one in five people

Coronavirus behaves in mysterious ways. Once affected, it is difficult to fathom when one can be completely relieved of the virus. While some people recover from it, as per the WHO estimation 10 to 20% of those affected get symptoms even weeks and months after the infection.

There are several symptoms which have been spotted by health experts that linger in an individual weeks and months after the COVID.

One such symptom is related to the ear.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is when you experience ringing or other noises in one or both of your ears which are not caused by any external sound. This is a problem because you can only hear the sharp noises and no one else can't. Therefore, at times it becomes difficult to explain the sound to others as it is not audible to them.

As per health reports, without COVID, tinnitus occurs in older adults mostly. It is not a disease, but either a symptom or consequence of any other medical condition.

Due to frequent weird noises, it becomes difficult for the person to carry on with daily life, in many cases tinnitus blocks the external hearing capacity of the person.

Tinnitus and its link with COVID

A survey carried out by the ZOE COVID study found that 19% or one in five people experience trouble in hearing due to tinnitus.

“It turns out that 19 percent, or nearly one in five, has ear problems with Covid, and in our newsletter we got 14,500 to complete the survey and we had about 5,000 test positive for Covid and had the ear ringing. What we learned from this was that for a few it lasted only a couple of days, and most people, over 50 percent said they were still experiencing some form of ear ringing that comes and goes and is mild or moderate for weeks or months afterward," ZOE co-founder Professor Tim Spector told media.

"We’ve heard anecdotally from my ENT colleagues that they have seen an increase in referrals for tinnitus following Covid," he added.

Symptoms of tinnitus

People having tinnitus hear sounds which range from roars to squeals. These sounds are audible to the affected individual only and it blocks its external hearing ability.

Sounds like buzzing, roaring, clicking, whistling, humming, hissing are heard when an individual has tinnitus.
