Artists and Cartoonists Felicitated

Cartoonists and organizations contributing to the development of the satire-art genre were felicitated with ‘Baratha Memorial Honor’ and ‘Swarna Kuchikalam’. The program was organized by Cartoonist Club of Nepal on March 21 at Kathmandu. Cartoonists Durga Baral ‘Batsayan’ and Mohanshyam Maharjan ‘Khokana’ were honored with Baratha Memorial Award -2071 and 2072 respectively.

Different institutions contributing toward the holistic development of cartoon sector in Nepal, namely Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, Kamana Publications and Basudev Luitel Guthi were felicitated with the ‘Swarna Kuchikalam’.

Likewise, Prof. Ramkumar Pande, Dr. Kundan Aryal and Ashok Man Singh, Founder President, Cartoonist club of Nepal were also awarded the ‘Swarna Kuchikalam’. Culture laureate Satya Mohan Joshi felicitated all the recipients.

He recalled the past when ‘Gaijatra Programs’ was held at the then Royal Nepal Academy. “Programs held then lasted for a week. The comedy was showcased in different forms. Cartoons were one of them. One could feel the freedom of expression back then”. He said.

The secretary of the club, Yogash Kumar Khapangi stated, “It has only been 80 years since the evolvement of cartoons n Nepal. Even to this day, it is hard for cartoonists to run their livelihood depending only on this profession.” He added.

K. K. Karmacharya, Chancellor of Nepal Academy of Fine Arts guaranteed his contribution to the growth and development of the cartoon circle in Nepal in the days to come.

One of the cartoonists honored in the program, Dr. Kundan Aryal said that this is the ‘Golden Age’ for the cartoon industry. “Cartoons have been neatly covered by every form of media.” He claimed. He also suggested that the cartoons be archived. He added that timely discussions and evaluation are required on the cartoons created. “There are ongoing discussions to involve cartoons in respective curriculum too,” he said.
