So you have decided to raise a feminist in the house. Good for you! But, for something so crucial, the conditioning needs to be done right. Between the ages of 3 and 5, they can spot gender differences and form their own opinions, which can further shape their personalities. Hence, raising a feminist son or daughter, somebody who understands the importance of equality, should start young, even before they grasp their ABCD and numbers.

1. Show good examples
How do kids learn what is right and what is not? By observing their parents, elders, and family first. As parents, don't be afraid to fight the stereotypes and do the right things. Men can cook and women can run the family. Children should be taught that there are no jobs strictly 'reserved' for a specific gender.

2. Promote gender-neutral activities
Charity begins at home and so does equality. If you really want to raise a child who is more accepting and welcoming in the changing world, start by doing away with any gender-specific roles at home. Allow boys the freedom to play with dolls, girls to behave in a certain way or play sports. Encourage them to do away with the stereotypes. Another way to do so is by encouraging boys to play with girls and vice versa. Do not restrict their interaction.

3. Think before you speak
When your son cries, don't say "you are crying like a little girl" or when your daughter sits in a certain way, don't ridicule her and tell her to act more feminine. Kids at a young age pick up what they see and imitate that. Hence, inculcating right values is essential.

Also, it is important that you teach your children- boys especially that it is okay to cry and let out emotions. It doesn't make them any less worthy. Expressing emotions is healthy and not something to be ashamed of.

4. Ban sexism-anywhere you see
Whether it is a cartoon with bad gender norms you see or color categorization in a store, stop and help your child identify the wrongdoings. Identify what is sexist and what is acceptable to instill feminist values.

5. If you are raising boys, teach them this
Teach your boys the two golden words-consent and respect. Boys should be held responsible for their actions and made to understand that they can't get away with actions, inappropriate behavior or remarks because of their gender. Regardless of the sex, they should learn to respect everyone.
