Vishwakarma Jayanti or Vishwakarma Puja is the festival celebrated annually to acknowledge inventors of technology who work in the field of physics for the betterment of people. This year it is being observed on September 18. And on this day Lord Vishwakarma is worshipped with much gusto. According to the ‘Rig Veda’, Vishwakarma is the personification of creative power of the Supreme Being and the divine architect of the universe who invented many architectural wonders along with tools/weapons for gods/goddesses. And here’s a list of five things about him and his invention:

1. Lord Vishwakarma is regarded as the god of architecture and engineering who is described as the god of carpenters, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, masons and all those people who are skilled in the crafts.

2. He is said to have revealed the Sthapatyaveda or fourth Upa-veda and directs over the sixty-four mechanical arts.

3. In Hindu mythology, there are four eras in this earth known as four yugs (time span)—Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapar Yuga and Kali Yuga. And in all these eras, he had built several towns and palaces for the gods. Swarga Lok (heaven) in Satya Yuga—abode of Lord Indra; Lanka for Ravan in Treta Yuga; Dwarka, Hastinapur and Indraprastha in Kali Yuga.

4. He is known as the designer of all the flying chariots of the Gods, and all their weapons with divine attributes. One of his creation is the sacred weapon of Lord Indra—Vajra—made from the bones of sage Dadhichi and Agnayestra. He even created the Sudarshan Chakra for Lord Krishna.
