KATHMANDU, Dec 23: A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the government decision to recruit 3,000 Madehsi youths en masse in the Nepal Army under a separate battalion.

The Chure Bhawar Rastriya Ekta Party filed the petition at the apex court, stating that any ethnicity-based induction into national army is inappropriate, and demanded that the policy paper regarding the proposed recruitment be scrapped. [break]

CBREP lawmaker Badri Neupane said the cabinet decision allowing mass recruitment into national army of people from one community curves constitutional rights of those from other communities.

Stating that the cabinet decision can bring division in the national army and can have serious ramifications for national security, the petitioner has demanded that the apex court issue an stay order against the implementation of the government decision.
