Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai will inaugurate the six-day 18th Nepal Information Technology Show and Conference on Thursday. The event has been offering a platform for latest products and interaction on the ICT sector.

On the eve of the event, Republica talked with Suresh Karna, the president of Computer Association of Nepal (CAN), organizer of the event, about major attractions and management of Info-Tech. [break]

How is this edition of CAN Info-Tech going to be different from the previous ones?

The major difference is on the management side. This year, we have made branding pavilion and truss for the trade. We have separated the food court from regular stalls, making it more organized. The number of participating companies has increased to 120. New launches are there but this time we are working on crowd management and to give better experience to visitors.

What are the major attractions of the event?

Last year, tablet PCs and netbooks grabbed the attention, which I believe is going to continue this year too as a number of companies are bringing in different models of tablet PCs, starting from Rs 12,000. Smart TV, ultra-light laptops, smartphones, special offers and new technology of ISPs, cloud computing devices and various solutions and products for businesses are likely to impress visitors.

How do you see the growing participation of ISPs?

It’s clear that a large number of people still don’t have Internet connectivity. Almost every household in urban areas has a computer today but people have understood that computer is not just a storage or a multi-media device. The product is there and now it requires connectivity, which can open up huge business prospects for ISPs. Internet today is not just for social networking sites or emails rather than it has become an integral part of the lifestyle. With the growing number of Internet users, new prospects for economy and development will be created.

What do you consider as major achievement of CAN Info-Tech in the last 17 years?

The event itself has become a brand where companies wait to unveil their products. We have been able to create awareness for use of IT products. The event has also given a platform to promote new products. We have been able to reach people of rural areas by organizing the event outside the country.

What is the number of visitors you are targeting for the event?

I actually don’t believe in numbers. What matters more is quality visitors and degree of satisfaction they get after visiting the event. Nevertheless, we hope that turnout this time wouldn’t be less than last year.

How do you think it is supporting IT industry of the country?

Business enterprises are getting a platform at the fair to showcase their products. In previous editions, people simply used to look at the gadgets, after that they started coming to buy the products, and now people visit the fair with the aim to be updated about the innovations and new products. This way, we are helping create awareness.

Why should people not miss the event?

The event is the biggest ICT fair of the country. One should not miss the event as it can update one with latest innovations and new technologies being used in the country.
