KATHMANDU, April 27: Tea production in Nepal has recently enjoyed an increase. On the eve of National Tea Day, the National Tea and Coffee Development Board released data indicating a rising trend in tea production across the country.
According to the data, Nepal produced 27 million kilograms of tea in the fiscal year 2023/24, up from 26.4 million kilograms in the previous year. In fiscal year 2021/22, production was 26.30 million kilograms. However, from fiscal year 2018/19 to 2020/21, tea production had decreased, ranging between 23.70 million and 25 million kilograms.
Tea production stops with onset of winter

The latest data from the Department of Customs reveals that Nepal exported 16.50 million kilograms of tea worth Rs 3.63 billion in the fiscal year 2023/24. By mid-April in the current fiscal year 2024/25, Nepal had already exported tea worth Rs 3.57 billion.
The board forecasts that tea exports will reach Rs 4.50 billion by the end of the current fiscal year.
Currently, 15,203 tea farmers are involved in tea cultivation in Nepal. Additionally, 171 tea estates and 120 tea processing centers, including small and medium-sized ones, are operating nationwide. These estates and centers provide employment to approximately 60,000 Nepali workers.
Recent international competitions have affirmed that tea produced in Nepal is of the highest quality.
