SPORTS BRIEFS: TT fundraiser tournament for quake-affected players

KATHMANDU, May 31: Kathmandu District Table Tennis Association is all set to hold Open National Table Tennis Tournament in Kathmandu from July 12-16 to raise funds for those table tennis players who were affected by last month's devastating earthquake.

According to Dharma Man Bajracharya, president of the association, the tournament will be organized at the National Table Tennis Training Centre, Lainchaur, in Kathmandu and will feature nine events.


The tournament includes senior and junior men/women's singles and team events as well as veteran's singles for 50-year-old and above. Around 250 players are expected to take part in the event.

Sound TT in mid-June
KATHMANDU: Nepal Visually Impaired Table Tennis Association is organizing the Sound Table Tennis Tournament in the capital on June 16 and 17. The tournament will feature 30 singles events -- 15 for men and 15 for women, according to Association General Secretary Kumar Paudel. The tournament will be played at Laboratory Higher Secondary School, Kirtipur. The players to compete in the event are under training in Kirtipur from May 19. Kathmandu District Sports Development Committee, Youth Information Centre, Kathmandu, and Nepal Para Olympic Committee will provide financial support for holding the event.

Nepali athletes to compete in Asian C'ship
KATHMANDU: A three-member Nepali athletics team comprising two players, is set to leave for Huwan, China, on Monday to take part in the 21st edition of the Asian Athletics Championship slated for June 3-7. Sprinter Ashish Chaudhary will take part in the men's 100 m, 200 m and 400 m sprint, while Sima Kumari Tharu will vie in women's javelin throw. Chhabi Lal Thapa is the team coach. National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama bid farewell to the team on Sunday during a function organized at Kathmandu. Meanwhile, Nepal Athletics Association President Raj Bikram Shah left for Huwan on Saturday to take part in the Asian Congress to be held there.
