SPORTS BRIEFS: Shrestha clinches APF badminton title

KATHMANDU, March 6: Bikas Shrestha clinched the men´s singles title on the final day of the Sixth Nationwide Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Tournament at the covered hall of the Armed Police Force (APF) Club, Halchowk on Saturday.



Shrestha defeated Ram Singh Chaudhary 21-13, 21-16 in straight sets in the final to take home the title. [break]



In the other matches of the day, Sara Devi Tamang ousted Puja Shrestha 21-11, 21-10 in the final match of women´s singles to claim the title.



In the final match of men´s doubles, Bivek Shrestha teamed with Ratnajit Tamang to beat Ram Singh Chaudhary and Navaraj Joshi 21-16, 21-18.



Meanwhile, the pair of Surendra Singh and Hemant Nepal struggled past Pawan Kumar Shrestha and Rajendra Prasad Shakya 21-19, 21-19 in the final match of veterans´ doubles.



APF Inspector General Sanat Kumar Basnet gave away prizes and shields to the winners. On the occasion, Basnet also felicitated senior badminton player Tri Ratna Manandhar and handed him Rs 25,000.







The tournament was held in the memory of the first inspector general of APF Krishna Mohan Shrestha. A total of 614 players participated in the tournament that concluded on Saturday. The tournament carries the highest cash prize in badminton in Nepal.





Nobel Cup in June



Nobel Cup, the first National U-19 Three-on-Three Basketball Championship, is scheduled to be held next month.



According to a press statement issued by Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA), the championship will take place from June 3 to 9. The championship will be played in league-cum-knockout format.



NeBA expected that altogether 100 teams will vie for the title from both girls´ and boys´ categories. NeBA President Lama Tendi Sherpa and Chief Coordinator Dinesh Thapa of Nobel Academy signed a five-year sponsorship deal for the championship on Saturday.





Rambir Chess Tournament



KATHMANDU, Mar 6: Rambir Shrestha Memorial Fide Rating First National Open Chess Tournament is set to begin on Monday.



The Himalayan Chess Club, Kumaripati, Lalitpur is organizing the six-day tournament.



The club, organizing a press meet on Saturday, said that 108 rated players of the country will be vying for the trophy. The winner of the tournament will receive a cash award of Rs 10,000.
