SPORTS BRIEFS: Shahi wins silver in Busan

KATHMANDU, Sept 11: Manita Shahi won silver medal in the Busan International Taekwondo Championship on Friday. Shahi had won gold medal in the Korean Open Taekwondo Championship last week.



Meanwhile, Ayasha Shakya had to return empty handed after losing a match against a Korean opponent. Shakya along with Yan Kumari Chaulagain had secured silver in Korea Open. Chaulagain also couldn"t bag any medal in Busan. [break]





Valley Public, Daffodil in final



KATHMANDU, Sept 11: The girls´ teams of Valley Public and Daffodil advanced into the final of the First AIA Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Saturday.



Valley Public struggled past Mahendra Bhawan 24-23 in the semifinal match held at the Awareness International Academy court in Satungal. Laxmi Shrestha and Choki Sherpa contributed 12 points each for the winners. In another semifinal match, Daffodil ousted Angels´ Heart 36-30 with the help of 15 points from Pasangala Sherpa.



In the junior boys´ category, Babylon set up a final clash with Gaurishankar after eliminating the hosts 33-23 in the semifinal. Anmol Rai contributed 14 points for Babylon. Meanwhile, Gaurishankar squeezed past Daffodil 19-17 to secure final berth.





Double victory for New Diamond



KATHMANDU, Sept 11: New Diamond secured a double victory in the First Inter-secondary School Level Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. The school won the titles in the girls´ and staff category. The boys´ team of New Diamond, however, was restricted to the second position.



In the girls´ final, New Diamond defeated Gyan Sudha 25-16, 25-12, 25-12 in straight sets to claim the title. Ambrosia Ideal School (AI) settled for the third spot. Shanti Shrestha of Gyan Sudha was adjudged the best lifter while Ramila Tandukar of New Diamond bagged the award for the best spiker. AI won the award for discipline.



In the title clash of the staff category, New Diamond edged out New Horizon 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 in the match held at RIBS court in Gajurdhara.



In the boys´ final, LRI struggled past New Diamond 15-25, 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 15-13 to lift the title. The hosts RIBS finished third. Anish Malla of AI was adjudged the best lifter while Ratan Bista of RIBS was declared the best spiker. Prike English School bagged the award for discipline.





LA Swimming kicks off



KATHMANDU, Sept 11: Shirish Gurung and Aditi Ghimire bagged two gold medals each on the opening day of the LA Cup Swimming Championship on Saturday.



Gurung of Chand Bagh School won golds in 50 m butterfly and 50 m breaststroke in the boys´ 11-12 age group. Likewise, Ghimire from The British School claimed first position in 50 m butterfly and 50 m breaststroke of girls´ 11-12 age group.



Likewise, Ideal English School´s Amit Lama claimed gold in U-10 boys´ 25 m breaststoke while Sonira Bista of Baba Boarding School won gold in the same event of girls. Dipen Rana of hosts Little Angels´ School finished 25 m butterfly of U-10 boys in the first spot. Meanwhile, Niharika Tuladhar of Lincoln School won 25 m butterfly in U-10 girls´ category.



Banin Shrestha of Golden Gate won the title of boys´ 50 m breaststroke in the age group of 15-17 while Lincoln School´s Jahn Heijdra clinched the title of boys´ 50 m butterfly in the same age group. Lincoln´s Shreya Dhital claimed gold medal in girls´ 50 m butterfly of 15-17 category.
