SPORTS BRIEFS: Richmond Mavericks to tour Nepal

KATHMANDU, May 4: Richmond Mavericks FC, a semi-professional football team from the north-east of England has finally decided to play friendly matches with the local clubs of Nepal. The tour was cancelled last year due to the Icelandic volcano.



Mavericks will play four friendly matches with the local teams in three different places --Kathmandu, Pokhara and Butwal. The tour is being coordinated in Nepal by nepa~laya in collaboration with Kathmandu Khel Mandal (KKM). [break]



On May 12, Mavericks will play against New Road Team at APF Ground, Halchok. On May 14, Rupandehi XI will play Mavericks at ANFA Academy Ground, Butwal. Kaski XI will meet Mavericks on its home ground, Pokhara Stadium, on May 16. The final match of the visitors will be again played at APF Ground against APF club.



The team is scheduled to arrive Kathmandu on May 11.



“We´ve had a good season in England, and we hope to give all four sides a good, strong game. But, of course, the most important thing is enjoying ourselves, and making new friendships through football.” said tour manager, Owen Amos.



“We are glad to welcome the Mavericks to Nepal. I am confident that our players in Nepal will enjoy playing and interacting with the visiting players,” said Binay Pradhan of KKM.





ANFA campaign to end violence against women



All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) and Sathi (NGO) started a campaign to end violence against women, from Chitwan on Wednesday. The initiative is launched by ANFA and Sathi with the slogan "Our goal: End violence against women and girls".



ANFA has taken the initiative in the campaign under the Asian Football Confederation´s ´Dream Asia´ program.



Chief District Officer Bashanta Ram Gautam inaugurated the interaction program of the campaign and thanked ANFA and Sathi for launching the campaign. ANFA President Ganesh Thapa and Sathi´s President Bandana Rana also pointed out the need for bringing an end to violence against women.





Hamal, Nepal continue lead



FIDE Master Manish Hamal and Prakash Nepal are leading the Salhakar Memorial National Open Chess Tournament after the completion of the fifth round on Wednesday. Both have collected 4.5 points each.



Hamal defeated Niraj Niraula and drew with Madan Krishna Kayastha in the fourth and the fifth rounds, respectively. Nepal overcame Bikash Kuluju and drew with Niraula.



Harishchandra Chaulagain and Niraula are in the third and fourth positions. Rajaram Duwal, Ganesh Man Duwal and Umesh Sainju have 3.5 points each.
