President bids farewell to Nepali team for Winter Youth Olympics

KATHMANDU, Feb 8: President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Monday bade farewell to a three-member Nepali team that will take part in the Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway from February 12-21.

According to a press release issued by the Nepal Olympic Committee, the Nepali team includes only one player -- skier Safal Ram Shrestha -- who will compete in the slalom and giant slalom events of Alpine skiing in the 10-day tournament. Sunil Kumar Shrestha and Ram Prasad Gurung are the other members of the Nepali team.

President Bhandari wished success to the team during a function organized at the President's House, Shital Niwas, Maharajgunj, the statement further reads.

Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) Vice President Jyoti Rana was present during the function instead of NOC President Jeevan Ram Shrestha, who is currently in northeast India to attend the 12th South Asian Games.

Altogether 71 countries will participate in the Winter Youth Olympics. This is the second time Nepal is participating in the winter games. Nepal's maiden participation in the Winter Youth Olympics was during the 2012 edition held in Innsbruck, Austria, where Bibas Lama had represented the country in skiing.
