Citing that it was becoming difficult to keep track of relief materials supplied by donor agencies in the country and areas where they are being distributed, secretary at the PMO, Shanta Raj Subedi, directed the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to immediately prepare an updated inventory of all the relief materials and provide it to the Home Ministry.
Likewise, Subedi also instructed the Home Ministry to direct District Disaster Relief Committee to monitor the distribution of relief materials carried out by various organizations at the district level to prevent duplication. On Thursday, a team of government officials led by secretary Subedi inspected Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Customs, TIA Immigration Office, and the activities of Nepal Army personnel deployed for the supply relief materials by various organizations for the victims of the earthquake.
"During our monitoring, we found that various national and international organizations, mainly UN bodies, are bringing in several items as relief items but they don't disclose whether they are really distributed to the victims," he said
With donor agencies averse to working in transparent manner and providing details about the goods they have been bringing in, officials worry that they might be bringing in goods that in normal times would not be allowed.
"We are compelled to enforce strict rules for maintaining transparent inventory of goods meant for relief," he said.
