All these years, peon Amar Bahadur Khadka has been doubling as radiographer at the hospital and the doctors said he has been doing a good job. Khadka said he x-rays around 15 patients every day.[break]
"As no radiographer has been posted to the district hospital, the hospital has given me the responsibility for conducting x-rays. I have been handling it very well for the past 11 years," said Khadka. "I know this is not my job but practice has made be capable," he added.
According to the hospital, the x-ray machine at the hospital was left untouched until Khadka agreed to operate it. Khadka, who has been working as peon for 20 years now, shared that he received minor training before he started to operate the machine. "I started off with little knowledge that I had gained from two health campaigns held in the district," said Khadka.
Dr Yaduchandra Ghimire, the chief of the District Health Office, Rukum informed that Khakda is capable to work as radiographer. "He has performed impressively despite his lack of expertise in the field. We had no choice but to use him as no one agreed to work as radiographer in the district," said Ghimire.
Meanwhile, Khadka said he is dissatisfied with the low pay he receives despite the work he does.
