KATHMANDU, Jan 30: The opposition parties have decided to reject the ordinances introduced by the government recently. The decision was made during a meeting of opposition parties held at the parliamentary party (PP) office of the main opposition party, CPN (Maoist Center), in Singha Durbar on Thursday.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Maoist Center Chief Whip Hit Raj Pandey stated that the seven participating parties unanimously decided to raise issues of public concern in the parliamentary session starting Friday. Pandey emphasized that the opposition had decided to reject the ordinances, citing “procedural flaws in the way they were introduced by the government.”
Death of a political virus
According to Pandey, opposition parties believe that introducing ordinances just as parliament is convening reflects 'ill intent'.
He said, “Instead of presenting all laws in an organized manner in parliament, the government has introduced ordinances right before the session begins, which is procedurally incorrect. Additionally, regarding the ordinance, the government had previously stated that it would expedite work on the Economic Procedures and Financial Responsibility Act, but the matter is still under discussion in the parliamentary finance committee.”
Pandey further remarked, “Had the discussion taken place in the committee, the process would have been faster. However, the government bypassed this step by issuing an ordinance, undermining due process. While the ordinance was claimed to be a quicker solution, its approach was inappropriate. We have unanimously decided to reject it.”
He concluded that the government's reliance on ordinances was unjustified. The meeting also stressed that parliament should serve as a platform for strong public representation. Additionally, Pandey warned that opposition parties may resort to street protests against the government, if necessary.
