KATHMANDU, Dec 9: There are still challenges for the protection of human rights in Nepal despite the formulation of laws in this regard.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) points out this in its annual report which was presented to President Bidya Devi Bhandari today.
NHRC chair Anup Raj Sharma presented the report of the fiscal year 2074/75 BS to the President amidst a programme at the Office of President.
The report was presented before the Head-of-the-State in accordance with article 294 (1) of the constitution.
The NHRC in a year received 152 complaints of human rights violation. Expected progress and achievements regarding the economic, social and cultural rights and other human rights of the people remained unmet, the report mentioned.

In the same period, the NHRC executed its investigation into 350 previous and new complaints and it conducted 463 monitoring in course of the investigation.
On the occasion, the NHRC Chair said the overall situation of human rights in Nepal was not satisfactory. "The survivors of the decade-long armed at home have been still denied justice since the completion of the beginning of the peace process."
The conclusion of the NHRC is that despite the formulation of laws related to fundamental rights, the implementation side is complicated. Use of children for various activities during the election, the existing situation of caste-based discriminations are worrying.
Labour exploitation on foreign migrant workers continues, cases of domestic violence are increasing and the condition of survivors of the 2015 April earthquake is more pathetic.
"Impunity still persists and the NHRC recommendations have not been implemented," the report states, complaining about the lack of expected support from the government towards that end.
The NHRC is forced to work in adverse condition as its infrastructures damaged by the quake are yet to be restored. RSS
