New Year 2025 begins Today

It is believed that the AD (Anno Domini) era started after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Pope Gregory introduced the current calendar, replacing the Julian calendar, which is why it is called the Gregorian calendar.

KATHMANDU, Dec 1: The New Year 2025 begins today according to the Gregorian calendar.


It is believed that the AD (Anno Domini) era started after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Pope Gregory introduced the current calendar, replacing the Julian calendar, which is why it is called the Gregorian calendar.

The Julian calendar was initially introduced by ruler Julius Caesar. Due to controversies, this calendar was adopted in Russia only 200 years later, according to former administrator and astrologer Dr Khilanath Bastakoti.


Despite controversies, the calendar gained global acceptance during the colonial period as it was imposed in various regions. While the Gregorian calendar is not traditionally followed in Nepal, foreign visitors to the country widely use it. In recent years, celebrations of the New Year have been observed in various parts of Nepal.


Places popular among foreign tourists, such as Thamel, Boudha, Pokhara, Sauraha, and Lumbini, celebrate the New Year." From Tuesday evening, areas like Thamel, Boudha, Swayambhu, and New Road in Kathmandu became  lively with celebrations.
