KATHMANDU, April 24: The Parliamentary committee has reached an agreement to set the mandatory retirement age for civil servants at 60 years. The subcommittee under the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives has agreed to raise the age limit from 58 to 60 years. Subcommittee coordinator and Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Dilendra Prasad Badu said that a consensus was reached to gradually increase the retirement age.
He said that the sub-committee has submitted the report, including this agreement, to the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee.
Retirement age Increase threatens 2,500 new govt appointments

Although there is agreement to increase the age limit, employees who reach 58 years of age by the end of the month of Asar (mid-July) will automatically retire. For those reaching 58 years in Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August), the limit will be set at 58 years and 6 months. It will then gradually increase to 59 years and 6 months for the next year and finally to 60 years in the six months following that period.
Although the government had initially proposed to directly raise the retirement age from 58 to 60 years in the bill, the subcommittee decided on a phased implementation after consulting with the Public Service Commission.
Chairperson of the State Affairs Committee, Ramhari Khatiwada, expressed full support for the agreement prepared by the subcommittee. He said, “We are fully on board with this agreement. It will be passed as it is.”
