Koirala urged the CPN-UML not to abstain from voting in the sixth round of prime ministerial election slated for September 5. “The country should no longer be held a hostage of indecision. The UML should vote for the Maoists if not us,” he said. “Nepali Congress is ready to stay in opposition.” [break]
At a meeting held with the representatives of Journalists Society for Parliamentary Affairs (JSPA), Koirala, however, suggested the UML to think seriously before taking a decision as NC had supported the UML-led government till the last moment.
Koirala ruled out the possibility of amending the Interim Constitution for consensus. “The UML has been talking of amendment in the constitution,” said Koirala, adding: “Constitution amendment is not possible for every thing.”
The JSPA delegation had met Koirala to draw his attention over the possibility of another failure in writing the new constitution by the extended deadline of May 28, 2011. JSPA also plans to hold a meeting with Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal.
Koirala claimed that NC was not responsible for the current political deadlock. He argued that the inflexibility of the Maoists was chiefly to be blamed for the current political uncertainty. “It would be a blunder to let the Maoists lead the new government unless they completely give up their arms,” he argued.
