Govt introduces bill to fine trolls up to Rs 500,000

The bill states, “No one shall use offensive words, audio or video content, troll photos, abuse, insult or hate speech with the intention of defaming or humiliating someone's honor and reputation.”

KATHMANDU, Jan 28: The government has introduced a bill to fine trolls up to Rs 500,000.


The bill, which was made to make provisions regarding the operation, use and regulation of social media, has introduced a provision to fine trolls up to Rs 500,000. The government has submitted this bill to parliament. The bill mentions that social media users must comply with certain conditions.

The bill states, “No one shall use offensive words, audio or video content, troll photos, abuse, insult or hate speech with the intention of defaming or humiliating someone's honor and reputation. The individuals who engage in such activities could face a fine of up to Rs 500,000.”


Similarly, the bill also mentions the prohibition of spreading false and misleading information, distorting information, and advertising and trading in prohibited items. It also mentions that social media users will be given a chance to clarify before being fined.
