According to legend, a demon once terrorized Kathmandu, particularly targeting children, in the area now known as Tundikhel. After his defeat, people celebrated by riding horses over his body. It is believed that the annual horse parade at Tundikhel continues to keep the demon's spirit away.

Religiously known as Aswa Yatra, the horse parade also symbolizes the welcoming of the New Year.
