KATHMANDU, Oct 24: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has urged the global community to take Nepal’s demand for climate justice seriously, citing the unprecedented natural disasters the country has experienced this year.
Addressing the 2026 Global Governance Forum (Xiong'an) conference organized by the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, Bhandari stressed the need for stronger regional cooperation among Nepal, China and India to protect the Himalayas, monitor glaciers, share meteorological data, develop early warning systems and coordinate disaster response, according to her secretariat.

She also called for reliable support from the United Nations and international financial institutions to reduce climate risks and promote inclusive, resilient and environmentally sustainable development.
Advocating a world order based on international law rather than power, Bhandari emphasized strengthening the United Nations and reforming global governance to make it more inclusive, representative, transparent and effective. She said ending poverty and hunger, promoting human well-being and redirecting resources spent on arms races towards development were shared global responsibilities.
Highlighting Nepal-China relations, she said the two countries shared longstanding cultural and people-to-people ties and reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to the One-China Policy. She also stressed respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and dialogue to address global challenges.
