CHITWAN, July 8: Officials at Regional Blood Bank in Chitwan have stopped people from carrying blood packs in normal polythene bags. Those in need of blood are now required to come with a cold box with appropriate temperature level so that the blood is not spoiled.

The blood should be kept at a temperature between 2 to 6 degree centigrade.

The blood bank used to allow people to carry blood packs in normal polythene bags until last year. The concerned authority was alarmed after it was found that blood carried in normal plastic bags harmed the patients. “After patients who had received blood from Bharatpur Cancer Hospital and other private hospitals started suffering from jaundice, it was found that they had received blood with high temperature” said Ramesh Paudel, chief of Regional Blood Bank, Bharatpur. “Representatives from the World Health Organization looked into the incident and advised us to use cold box mandatorily while carrying blood packs.”

Cold box can be availed free of cost from the hospital where a patient is undergoing treatment. According to Paudel, if the temperature of the blood is not maintained between 2 to 6 degree centigrade, the cells in the blood get destroyed, which might adversely affect patients.

Chitwan is the first place to make use of cold box mandatory, according to Umesh Dhakal of Nepal Red Cross Society.
