KATHMANDU, Sept 23: The United States plans to provide an additional $31 million for recovery efforts following the Bhotekoshi flood, according to the US Embassy in Nepal.
The plan was announced during a meeting in New York between Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker. Nepal’s mission in New York said they discussed bilateral relations, flood relief and reconstruction, and continued US support for recovery.

The embassy said $10 million is planned for permanent bridges in affected areas. Construction materials for the bridges would be purchased from American companies. The bridges are intended to restore transport links and improve regional connectivity.
A further $8 million is planned for drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter, protection, livelihoods and winter support for affected communities.
The remaining $13 million is planned for drones made with US technology to support future disaster recovery work, the embassy said.
With the new announcement, total US assistance for flood rescue and recovery in Nepal would exceed $36 million, according to the embassy. The United States also said it would work with the Nepal government to identify further support as needs arise.
