Sources familiar with the development said Bangladesh government has already forwarded her name to Nepal Government for agreement. [break]She is likely to assume her diplomatic charge in Kathmandu in the next few months once Nepal government approves her nomination. Shams will succeed the incumbent ambassador Neem Chandra Bhowmik.
Normally, the term of a Bangladesh ambassador abroad is of three years. Incumbent Bangladeshi envoy Bhowmik assumed office in Kathmandu in November, 2009.
Shams, who joined Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) in January 26, 1991, is currently serving as Director General (South Asia) at Bangladesh´s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dealing with Bangladesh´s bilateral relations with seven other South Asian countries. During her stint at the ministry she has had experience of working with various international organizations, SAARC and South Asian countries, far-west, budget and expenditure control.
A master degree holder in International Relations from Leeds University, UK, she has served in Bangladesh missions abroad including in Rome, Bangkok and New Delhi in various capacities. She served as the deputy high commissioner at Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.
Bangladesh opened its mission in Kathmandu on October 3, 1971, though a formal diplomatic relations between the two countries was established only a year later on April 8, 1972.
