KATHMANDU, Oct 8: Australia has announced an additional AUD 15 million in assistance for relief and early recovery efforts following the recent devastating floods in Nepal.
Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said the assistance was announced during his bilateral meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong in Melbourne. Khanal thanked Australia for its support, including A$11 million provided earlier.

According to Khanal, the two ministers discussed Nepal-Australia relations, climate action, education, student welfare and economic cooperation.
Khanal urged Australia to advocate for the impact of the climate crisis on Nepal’s fragile Himalayan ecosystem at global forums, particularly as it leads efforts toward COP31. He also called for greater cooperation in early warning systems, disaster preparedness and resilient reconstruction.
On education, Khanal requested favorable consideration for genuine Nepali students amid recent changes to Australia’s student visa policies. The two sides also discussed establishing Australian-accredited TVET institutes and university campuses in Nepal.
They further discussed expanding cooperation in trade, foreign investment, renewable energy, technology transfer and tourism, and expediting efforts to establish direct air connectivity between Nepal and Australia.
Khanal said the two sides agreed to maintain regular high-level engagements to translate their shared vision into concrete outcomes.
