RAUTAHAT, Sept 14: Police fired shots at demonstrators at Gaur, district headquarters of Rautahat, on Sunday afternoon injuring three people. A clash between protestors and security personnel ensued after the agitators attempted to enter into prohibited areas of Gaur municipality.
Lalbabu Patel, 42, and Chandeshwar Baitha, 21, of Gaur municipality and Mauhiruddin Ansari, 45, of Akolwa VDC, were injured in police firing. Among them, Patel and Ansari, whose conditions were said to be critical, have been rushed to Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital in Birgunj.
Thousands of locals from villages had gathered at the district headquarters to stage demonstrations. The police fired around three dozen shots and lobbed five dozen tear gas shells to bring the situation under control, according to SP Pradhyumna Karki.
Karki further claimed that protesters had attacked and opened fire at security personnel during the clash.
However, Babulal Sah, leader of the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), claimed that protestors did not fire any shots. He alleged the local administration for trying cast a negative light on the peaceful protest and using excessive force to suppress the voices of Madhesi people.
In view of the volatile situation, the local administration clamped an indefinite curfew in Gaur.
