CHITWAN, Feb 28: Two girls were washed away by the Narayani River while taking selfie standing on a rock on the edge of the river, in Chitwan district on Sunday afternoon.
While one of the girls has been rescued alive, the other has gone missing since the incident occurred, informed Ward Police Office, Narayangadh.
Namrata Sapkota, 16, of Gaidakot Municipality, Nawalparasi district, was rescued alive, according to Police Inspector Satya Ram Thapa. The other one, Bismita Gyawali, 18, who is also from the same place, has not been found yet, informed Inspector Thapa. “Both of them are 12th graders at Aroma College in Bharatpur. The unfortunate incident happened while they were taking selfies standing on a rock and then they slipped,” he added.
According to an eyewitness, Shyam Thapa, six girls were splashing water and posing for the camera. “The two slipped into the river as they tried to jump to a rock for taking a selfie,” he said.
After seeing the girls being carried away by the water, Thapa and Govinda Lama, who were nearby, jumped into the river and rescued Namrata after swimming around 40 meters.
“We have deployed a search and rescue team to look for the missing girl. But it has not been able to find her,” said Sub-inspector Basanta Kunwar late evening on Sunday.
Such incidents are becoming common across the world. Only two years ago, three teenage girls drowned in the Trishuli River while attempting to take selfies.
