KATHMANDU, Aug 21: Students from various colleges have opposed Higher Secondary Education Board´s (HSEB) decision to monitor students´ uniform and make it mandatory in all educational institutions.

Twenty students from Maitighar-based St. Xavier´s College, St. Mary´s College, Namuna Machhindra, Softwarica and Kathmandu University staged a protest in front of HSEB office at Sanothimi, Bhaktapur on Tuesday saying that the Board was trying to divert people´s attention from its corrupt activities by raising baseless issues.
“The size of a girl´s skirt does not determine her talent,” said Sachin Thakuri, a Bachelor level student at Softwarica, who was leading the protest. [break]

Similarly, the officials had also directed the St. Xavier´s College to set dress code for students. The students have pointed that the HSEB immediately needs to implement some of the positive points in the code of conduct such as enforcement of admission charge, monthly fee and examination fee as set by the board.

Similarly, discouraging advertisement by colleges, using top students´ name and photo to lure new admissions are the positive points in the code of conduct that needs to be implemented, the students said.

However, the HSEB spokesperson Narayan Koirala claimed that the dress code in schools and colleges must be followed strictly to discourage the trend of bunking classes and riding bikes by students.
All higher secondary schools and plus two colleges have made it mandatory for the students to follow dress code.
