KATHMANDU, Jan 30: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said all Nepalis should come together for the successful and effective implementation of the federal democratic republican system, which has been institutionalized by the new constitution, and for the realization of the dreams of the martyrs.

Issuing a statement on the occasion of Martyrs' Day on Friday, President Bhandari said, "Time has come to join hands for economic development and prosperity through broader political consensus and unity."

She said that the historic day should inspire us to move ahead for the country, nationality, independence, freedom, self-admiration and protection of the human rights.

The Martyrs' Day was established to honor the sacrifice of Sukra Raj Shastri, Gangalal Shrestha, Dharma Bhakta Mathema and Dashrath Chand, who were assassinated by the then autocratic Rana rulers for their role in defending the sovereignty, freedom and independence of Nepalese people. Chand and Mathema were hanged from a tree in Sifal, Kathmandu while Shrestha and Shastri were shot dead.

In her letter, the president has also expressed her heartfelt tribute for all the known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of country.
