Everyday we hear about the news about Violence against Women [VAW]. Recently, the news was about the acid attack. I often think whom to blame for VAW. The answer is the society that is patriarchal where women are suppressed from men. On the one hand, women are taught to do household works and look after the family. They are also taught that their husbands are god and have to do whatever they let them to do. On the other hand, men are taught to be strong and do whatever they want. This is the main cause for VAW.
Due to the patriarchal daughters are protected by parents rather than son. For example, if the daughter comes late at home, she has to give thousands of answers whereas sons are not expected to come home earlier. To some extent they are given freedom to come late. Even parents make them fear that they should not walk in the night time and they are not strong like man. The parents even make their daughters feel that they are not as strong and active as boys in the outside environment. The reason behind this is the patriarchal society and practice, which makes daughters and sons, differentiate in their work. This is due to lack of education.
Even when women enter in the workplace, there is gender disparity. Although, they are qualified for the job due to gender biases, they remain backward. Within the job also, they are given the roles of secretaries, dental hygienists, receptionists, childcare workers, cleaners and servants, nurses, librarians, elementary school teachers and waiters.
Moreover, films and advertising use women as a showpiece and they are used for glamour only. Films instead of showing women strong, they show women weak and cannot fight with the villains. Hero that is male has to come to save her. Hero is shown as a brave person but women are shown as crying and weak. Most of the films are claimed to be female oriented but somehow they make female dependent on male. Films do show the scenes like rape, dowry system, beating the female etc. that do have impact on the society.
We know it’s not easy to change the perceptive of the people and change the society immediately. It’s take time but it’s us, the people who live in the society should be aware and conscious about the way we behave with every woman. We should respect the women. We need to change the perceptive towards the women. Every husband should respect their wives. Fathers should respet their daughters. Female staffs should be respected. If this is done, there will be less Violence against Women.
