KATHMANDU, Jan 25: The week before you take your holiday is kind of stressful because you're rushing about trying to complete your work. If you're not careful, you might even be saddled with important work during your vacation. And that would be extremely annoying.

To avoid that happening to you, here are some things you should be doing quickly and effectively before your holidays commence.

Finish all your important work before leaving

This is a cardinal rule for all holiday goers. You can't expect someone else to pick up where you left that assignment. Since you already know when you're starting your holiday a couple of weeks (at the least) in advance, you really have no excuse for not finishing up all your work well beforehand. Make a schedule and stick to it so that by the time your holiday begins, you have cleared all your work.

Let colleagues know well in advance about your holiday plans

Don't spring your holiday plans on your colleagues or boss at the last minute. While it's understandable if you can't help taking a few days off suddenly, it will be convenient for everyone if you inform people about your plans in advance. This way your vacation dates will not clash with your colleagues, and they will also not be swamped with unexpected additional work.

Bring your supervisor up to date

In the days before you leave for your holiday, update your supervisor or boss about what's happening at your front. Let them know what you've been doing so far and how much you will be able to complete.

Delegate work to others if possible

Don't hesitate to ask for help. You've tried your best but there's still some pending work or tasks that have sprung up at the eleventh hour. This is when you can ask your colleagues to step in or inform your supervisor. If the tasks are not urgent, notify your boss that you will get back to them after you return from your break. However, if it's something that has to be completed or updated when you're still enjoying your trip, you can ask your colleagues to fill in for you.

Contact your important clients

If you're handling an important project, you should definitely let your clients know that you will be starting your holiday soon. Arrange meetings and follow up on leftover tasks. Let them know whom they can contact in case of a crisis during your absence. You could direct them to your supervisor or a colleague.

Be available in case of emergencies

Make sure that you can be contacted by the office during your holiday. Leave at least two contact numbers where you can be reached in case of emergencies. Even if there's no access to the Internet where you're heading, you will surely be available through phone calls.
