KATHMANDU, Feb 26: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) is tightening regulations on SIM card and recharge card sales for outbound travelers in response to the rising complaints of irregularities.

For over a decade, Nepal has allowed companies to sell SIM cards to travelers before they leave the country. More than a dozen companies have obtained approval to import and distribute these SIM cards. However, unauthorized sales without the required "No Objection" approval have increased, prompting the regulator to act.

To address this issue, the NTA has issued a public notice mandating prior approval for importing and selling SIM cards from foreign telecom providers. Companies that fail to comply will face strict action, an NTA official confirmed.
