Happy ending for Nepal in chess<br/>Trinity, Golden Gate in semis

KATHMANDU, July 22: Nepal had a happy ending in the 11th Standard Chartered School Chess Championship in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Wednesday with all four of its players finishing in the top 10 positions. [break]



In the last round match three players emerged victorious while one suffered defeat. Bijayraj Aryal finished fifth overall with a total of seven points in his account. Bijayraj defeated Mohammad Joair Haqu in the last round match on the 38th move. He received a cash prize of taka 2005.



Rupesh Jaiswal defeated Omar Farukh to finish in the seventh position with 6.5 points. In the previous edition also Rupesh was in seventh position. Under the women´s category, Asmita Adhikari and Shanta Thapa finished sixth and seventh with 6.5 and six points respectively. Both of them bagged cash prizes of taka 1,000 each. Asmita won her last round match while Shanta lost to Alsi Sarkar.



The host country captured both the men´s and women´s titles. Mohammad Al Saif finished first with 8.5 points in the men´s category and Tanjina Akhtar Tani accumulated eight points in women´s category to bag the title.





Trinity, Golden Gate in semis



KATHMANDU, July 22: Trinity and Golden Gate colleges dominated the men´s quarterfinals in the ongoing Second Fr Donnelly 3 on 3 Basketball Championship at the GAA Hall in Thamel on Wednesday.



Golden Gate B dribbled past Prime A with the scores of 0-21, 21-15 and 21-05 to book a place in final four. In the second quarterfinals, Trinity A outplayed a hapless Rato Bangala with the scores of 21-0 and 21-5. Lexis of Trinity C helped his team win a closely contested match against Trinity B with the scores of 6-21, 21-9 and 21-15.



Likewise, Golden Gate A sailed past Golden Gate AB in the fourth quarterfinal match with the scores of 21-8 and 21-11. The semifinal matches will be played at the GAA Hall, Thamel, on Thursday.





Birat elected in KDFA



KATHMANDU, July 22: Birat Jung Shahi has been elected as the President of Kathmandu District Football Association (KDFA) for fourth straight term.



The general assembly of the KDFA, held on Wednesday morning, also elected its representatives for the All Nepal Football Association election to be held on September 7. The general assembly elected Bharat Prasad Aryal, Dinesh Maharjan and Mahesh Shakya as vice-presidents; Paresh Sapkota as general secretary and Tanit Maharjan as treasurer.



The tenure of the new executive body will be four years.





Shrestha elected unopposed in Rupandehi DFA



KATHMANDU, July 22: Hari Prasad Shrestha has been re-elected as the president of Rupandehi District Football Association.



The general assembly held on Wednesday unanimously elected a 13-member executive committee led by Shrestha. Birendraman Shrestha, Ashok Kumar Thapa Darlami and Amrit Kumar Shahi are the vice-presidents in the new panel.
