JUMLA, Jan 9: Chhau sheds (menstruation hut) are being dismantled in western Nepal following strict directive from the government to end the malpractice of banishing women to such sheds during their periods. However, uprooting this tradition does not seem that easy in Jumla. Unlike other districts where Chhaupadi tradition is in practice, chhau sheds are not built outside the houses here. Instead, girls and women in Jumla are forced to share space with cattle at the sheds meant for cows and goats when they bleed.

SINDHUPALCHOWK, Jan 9: The earthquake-ravaged Ratna Rajya Secondary School of Sindhupalchowk has got three newly-built blocks and other infrastructures worth Rs 1 billion with the financial support from the Chinese government. The light maroon buildings with a total of 137 rooms set up against the backdrop of scenic mountains to the north make the school arguably the “costliest ” community school in the country. To the south of the school flows Bhramayani River. The new look of the school has left teachers and students awestruck.

People are huddling in tea shops and chautaris across the country to discuss the possibility of World War III and families of our migrant workers are rightly worried by the news coming out from the Middle East. Sadly, our government has done very little to assure the public of the measures it will take to provide the necessary support to Nepalis in the region in the unlikely event of an all-out war. We have yet to see a statement or public remarks from the government to assure the worried Nepalis, both at home and abroad.
