Commuting in Kathmandu can be a nightmare and those who drive can vouch for that. And if you try to take a cab, the haggling will make you even more frustrated. And sometimes you might not want to drive or take a taxi to a party but then you are left with no option. It was because of these reasons Icchya Joshi came up with the idea of Dial a Driver (DAD). It is a private chauffer service established to make commuting hassle free and safe.

Danfe in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur, with its creative handbags and fancy dresses, feels much more than just another store from the moment you enter. It’s charm is enhanced by the often heard laughter of young women behind the sewing machines. After the devastating earthquake of 2015, the project Danfe was created to empower marginalized women through tailoring and leadership training. The clothes and accessories that were made by these women throughout the training period are displayed and sold at the showroom in Jhamsikhel.

Savvy living while saving

Everybody we spoke to for ‘Life lessons’ at one point or the other said we needed to save for the rainy days. And it’s not just them who are saying that. When it comes to financial advice, everybody, from your parents to your cousins, seems to tell you that. But, for most of us, choosing to scrimp and save means compromising on our lifestyles and desires. Well, it needn’t be that way say some savvy savers. There are ways you can live large and still have plenty of cash leftover.

Life teaches you a lot but not all of us are always paying attention. So The Week sought the advice of some people we have all come to know and admire on life, love, and money to get us started in our pursuit of happiness.

From fat to fit

If you are chubby as a kid, you are branded as cute. But as you age, the chubbiness starts to take an ugly form if the so-called ‘baby fat’ doesn’t go away. When I was 21, I weighed a staggering 90 kilos. Having always been on the heavier side, I didn’t think much of it, not even when I was teased in school, till a visit to the doctors scared me out of my wits. The doctor bluntly told me I’d have to lose a good amount of weight if I wanted to live a healthy, long life. He said I was the ‘perfect candidate’ for all sorts of life-threatening diseases.

The joke is on us

These days I’m starting to write so much about our Prime Ministers acting like comedians, I might as well draft a template for future reference. Seriously though, what’s with our prime ministers? Does this penchant for farce come with the post or do we just have the misfortune of being led, in recent history, by a succession of unwitting comedians? By now, everyone must have seen our PM’s ‘angry old man’ performance on Sajha Sawal – a perfect example of unscripted reality TV at its cringe inducing finest. Mercifully, the whole thing had at least one saving grace to it – it made even the most devout Congress ‘bhakts’ disappear from social media for at least a few days.

More than a victim

Often when it comes to cases of sexual abuse or harassment, it’s the occurrence of the event that steal the headline and becomes the talking point. The trauma of the incident though tends to linger. Survivors of sexual assault, big or small, can testify to that. However, self pity isn’t an option insist psychologists, organizations working with the victims, and the victims themselves. Priyanka Gurung reports.

Finding the fun in monsoon

It seems weather is just one of those things we will invariably complain about. Either it is too hot, too cold or, like these days, too wet. And we agree anybody who can’t afford to laze around at home has every right to complain. For most us, the puddles and muddy trails begin right from the gate of our homes. But to paraphrase some wise man or woman (#feminism), “You always have a choice.”

No time for gym

The number of hours in a day seems insufficient while we try hard to maintain a balance between work, family, and studies. Meanwhile, maintaining a lean body, good heath and perfect figure becomes an impossible task. Everyone knows that good, regular exercise is the ‘mantra’ for weight loss.
