KATHMANDU, May 24: Non-Maoist women members in the Constituent Assembly (CA) have jointly demanded that the CA term should be extended.

An executive meeting of the Women Caucus in CA held on Monday at Singha Durbar decided to press the political leadership for extension of CA term. The UCPN (Maoist) members represented in the executive committee were however absent in the meeting citing their busy schedule.

In the 23-member executive body, four are Maoist lawmakers. Altogether 197 members of the 601-member CA are women from 18 political parties. Of them, 79 are Maoist women members.

"Continuity of the CA is a must to complete the task entrusted with the assembly and to save the achievements attained so far and to take the peace process to a positive conclusion," the statement issued by the Caucus said.

It has also vowed to press the leadership against dissolving the CA without ensuring peace and constitution. The women lawmakers were scheduled to encircle the speaker´s rostrum at the parliament on Monday for the same but parliament meeting was postponed for Tuesday.

"We will encircle the rostrum at the next meeting if the parties fail to reach consensus," said Shanti Basnet Adhikari.

Earlier, members of 14 small parties had chanted slogans for 10 minutes in front of the rostrum during the parliament meeting on Monday demanding CA term extension.
