Veterinary drug outlets in foul play

KATHMANDU, July 3: Not only grocery and drug stores, veterinary drug retailers in Kathmandu Valley have also been found selling date-expired and written-over products.

This fact surfaced when a monitoring team from the Department of Commerce (DoC) for the first time inspected veterinary drug stores at Tripureswor and Thapathali area on Tuesday.[break]

The team inspected Munal Bio Veterinary Firm, Shikhar Trading House, Tripura Veterinary Medico, Polevet Imhouse, Kantipur Veterinary Distributors, Bishal Veterinary Distributors, Gaurab Pharmacy and Medical Suppliers, Veterinary Concern, Gems Veterinary and Sungava Veterinary Distributors.

“We found that some of the veterinary outlets were selling date-expired and written-over products or selling the drugs through untrained persons and had not renewed the certificates provided by DoC. Some have not even registered their businesses,” said Prem Prasad Paudel, director of DoC.

Sungava Veterinary Distributors was found not to have registered and was instructed to do so and submit the proof to the department within seven days.

Similarly, Polevet Imhouse has not renewed the certificate issued by DoC since the last 10 years and was found selling drugs that had been written over.The team has taken samples of the drugs and sent them to the Department of Drug Administration (DDA) for investigation.

Gaurab Pharmacy and Medical Supplier was found to be selling drugs through untrained persons and was requested not to do so. Veterinary Concern has also not renewed the certificate issued by DoC.

“However, no fault was found at the other veterinary outlets,” said Paudel.
