KATHMANDU, March 29: Badri Lal Nepali won the Second Ram Bir Shrestha FIDE Rating Chess Tournament on Tuesday earning eight points by the end of tenth round.
Nepali beat defending champion Uttam Raj Thapa in the final round and bagged a purse of Rs 15,000. [break]
Sudipt Chakravarti of India finished second with 7.5 points after he was defeated in the last round by Ganesh Man Duwal. Former Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar secured third position defeating Duwal in tie-breaker. Chakravarti received Rs 10,000 while Tandukar had to remain content with Rs 7,000.
Duwal, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha, Umesh Saiju, Keshav Shrestha, Rupesh Jaiswal, Niraj Niraula and Rajan Puri secured fourth to tenth positions, respectively.
NEA dominate day II
KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) continued their dominance on the second day of the Public Enterprises Sports Tournament being held at the Dashrath Stadium Covered Hall on Tuesday. In the table tennis doubles, the NEA pair of Anju Adhikari and Mina Kaderia beat Bidya Chhetri and Kavita Gyanwali of Nepal Telecom to win the title.
While Babu Kaji Shakya of Nepal Telecom beat Jeevan Ratna Shakya to lift the executive men´s singles title in table tennis. In the mixed doubles, two pairs from NEA have confirmed their final spots. In men´s volleyball, NEA defeated National Sports Council. Janak Shiksha Samagri Corporation, Industrial Estate Management Limited, Nepal Commercial Bank and Nepal Airlines Corporation also registered victories.
Sagarmatha start on winning note
DHANKUTA: Sagarmatha Youth Club of Morang started the seventh edition of Shahid Bhimnarayan Shrestha Running Cup Football Tournament that kicked off on Tuesday in Dhankuta on a winning note. Sagarmatha beat the hosts Dhankuta Football Club 2-0 to book a semifinal place in the events contested by eight teams. Sagarmatha scored both the goals in the second half.
Unmarked Shankar Subedi opened the scoring in the 54th minute in pass from skipper Yakub Rai and doubled the advantage in the 78th minute when he beat an advancing goalie and rolled the ball into the empty net. Defending champions Deurali Club of Dhankuta will take on Sahara Club of Pokhara on Wednesday.
Pragati, Kalyan Khelkud triumph
KATHMANDU: Pragati Yuva Club and Kalyan Khelkud Kendra won their respective matches on Tuesday in the Martyrs Memorial C Division League Football qualifiers at the ANFA ground, Satdobato. A lone goal from Loke Pun helped Pragati edge past Bharatpur Football Club 1-0. Pun hit the decisive goal in the 52nd mintue. In another match, Samaj Kalyan beat Balaju United Club with an identical score. The only goal by Alit Tamang in the 39th minute was sufficient for Samaj Kalyan to seal the victory.
