Parliamentary system has failed: Dahal

BANEPA, Aug 22: Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said on Sunday that the failure of the parliament to elect a new prime minister amounts to the failure of parliamentary system. Dahal said this before returning to Kathmandu from his overnight stay in Dhulikhel.



"The problem surfaced due to the failure of parliamentary system itself," said Dahal who stayed at the Mirabell Resort Hotel Saturday afternoon to prepare a political document for presentation at the central committee meeting of the party slated for Tuesday.[break]

 

He said he had committed no mistake by contesting the prime ministerial race. "The problem surfaced due to the growing polarization among the political force,” he said.



The Maoist chairman clarified that his party would not fix the number of its combatants for integration and the demand to fix the number by other political parties is against the peace agreements. "Maoists will not fix the number of combatants as no document related to the peace process stipulates”," he said.



Dahal said his party would hold a meeting with the Madhes-based parties Monday morning to garner a majority in his favor.



All options open?



Meanwhile, speaking at a function in Kathmandu, Maoist Senior Vice Chairman Mohan Baidya said his party is ready to keep all options open to break the political deadlock.



He argued Dahal as the party´s parliamentary leader should lead the government. "But other political parties don´t agree, we are ready to make any other leader the prime minister," Baidya said. He also said the Maoists are also ready to stay out of the government and play a constructive role as a responsible opposition party.
