KATHMANDU, July 20: Defense Minister Bidya Bhandari said on Monday that the government was not extending army chief Rookmangud Katawal´s term.

Terming it mere rumor, Bhandari, before flying to New Delhi on a week-long visit, said no one has asked her to extend or not extend the army chief´s tenure  so far.

Her visit to the southern neighbor was for strengthening bilateral relations, she added. Bhandari also informed that talks on exchanging support at bilateral level will take place during the visit. She is also likely to press for resumption of supply of non-lethal weapons by India. The government, meanwhile, has requested its United States counterpart, to resume the supply of the non-lethal weapons. Both India and the US had stopped the supply after the February First (2005) coup by the then king Gyanendra Shah.

She met Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala before leaving for New Delhi. "I visited him with a view that we can learn from his experience on international visits," she said.
