KATHMANDU, Feb 5: The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) announced on Friday that it would launch a countrywide civil disobedience and non-cooperation movement starting February 13. The association said the government´s inflexible attitude had forced it to take the step.

The association stated that it had informed the government on December 28 last year that it would launch another movement if the government did not take a concrete decision on medical professionals´ demands by February 12. However, the government did not respond to the demands on time. [break]

The association also announced its decision not to pay the additional health service taxes. The association also appealed to all private sector health organizations not to accept the corresponding additional fees from patients.

The NMA also warned that if the government did not address its demands by April 13, 2010, doctors would not participate in any government functions.

The association stated that ordinary people would not be affected by the movement. However, it added that the country was in a stage where only those taking to the street could get their demands met. Thus it was forced to use these methods.
