“Winning isn’t everything, but the will to win is everything. This is what I believe in. And my aim is to give my best in whatever I do,” Nagma Shrestha, one of the contestants of the Miss Colleges 2009 event said, and added, “And life is a box of chocolates you never know when you’ll get. I’m contestant No.1 Nagma Shrestha, and touch wood, I’ll prove to be No.1 at this pageant as well.”[break]

And so did Nagma. She was crowned Miss Colleges 2009 on September 9, 2009 in the Nepal Academy Hall in Kathmandu. Prathana Sen and Prinsa Shrestha grabbed the 1st and 2nd runner-up positions in the event, judged by personalities from diverse backgrounds such as academicians, makeup artists, journalists, singers, and entrepreneurs.

After three weeks of grooming sessions from various personalities such as Neer Shah, Rachana Gurung Sharma, Sneha Rana, and participation in a three-day traffic orientation, tree plantation ceremony, and awareness campaigns in two schools in Chhapaligaun in Budanilkantha, the aspiring 38 young college girls from Kathmandu, Dharan, Pokhara, and Dhulikhel battled for the title of Miss Colleges 2009 organized by College Readers, a bilingual monthly magazine.

Scheduled to start off at 3 pm, the event commenced rather late; and with not the official national anthem played out but from the flute notes of Sunil Nepali. Then there followed the presentation by the students of Kanchan Integrated School in the song “Shanti Lukaun Kahan” written by Basant Chaudhary.

After the heart-touching enactments of the students on various sensitive issues such as the growing protests and bandhs in the country, the 38 contestants of the event walked on the stage clad in red and green gowns.

In the preliminary round, contestants not only introduced themselves but also put forward interesting quotes such as “Save the Earth because you can’t go shopping to neighboring planets” to accentuate their introductions.

Along with the Miss Colleges 2009 crown, titles such as Miss Talent, Miss Personality, Best Dress, and Miss Creative were also given away. Four girls who had already made their way through the Talent Round, which has taken place on September 6, performed their songs, dances, karate moves and acting skills on the main event day in the Nepal Academy Hall.

Prathana Sen grabbed the Miss Talent title, which event coordinator Hukkum Raj Luitel claimed to be the major title after the Miss Colleges title itself. Prathana did her moonwalk on Michael Jackson’s “Black and White.” Along with it, she also belly-danced and enacted in the Nepali song “Deshle Ragat Magay” that wooed the crowd and panel of judges.

“From the initial phase, we emphasized that the pageant wasn’t only focused on beauty but other aspects of life as well, such as social service, confidence,” added the title winner Nagma.

Starlin Rajthala, Roshani Lamichhane, and Yashoda Aryal clutched the Miss Personality, Best Dress, and Miss Creative titles respectively.

The responsibilities of the participating girls along with the winners as their college ambassadors don’t end here, however.

“The girls will work as their college ambassadors and help in collecting volunteers from their respective colleges for the Bagmati Tree Plantation Campaign which will kick off before this year’s Dashain festivals,” informed event coordinator Hukkum Raj Luitel.
